Tonino Esposito, PhD

Prof. Esposito is the recently renewed Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Social Services for Vulnerable Children (CRC SSVC) and runs the Social Services Research Lab at the University of Montreal. He obtained his PhD at McGill University in 2012 and has developed expertise in the statistical analysis of clinical administrative social service data, making him a leader in North America in the field of child protection service trajectories, out-of-home placement, and neighbourhood disparities. Prof. Esposito’s participatory and applied community-based research in Quebec led to a series of population-based longitudinal studies of children’s placement trajectories in the province. He is leading efforts to facilitate collaborative child protection data exchange across Canada to support Canada-wide longitudinal research. Prof. Esposito has authored or co-authored over forty publications and has acted as consultant for government commissions and agency-based research into health and social service provision for children and families. He has a clinical background as a social worker in child protection and mental health and is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Montreal.

Hanna Caldwell, MSW

Hanna is a researcher for the Canada Research Chair in Social Services for Vulnerable Children and in the Social Services Research Lab at the University of Montreal. She is also affiliated with the Centre for Research on Children and Families at McGill University. Previously, she worked on research projects related to harm reduction family intervention in Inuit communities in Labrador, critical analysis of the concept of “neglect” in child protection, comparative analysis of federal child protection legislation in the U.S. and Canada, and content generation for a web-based tool for frontline family social work during the COVID-19 pandemic. In tandem with her research work, she has held roles in community organizations supporting refugee women both in Montreal and Amman, Jordan. Hanna is particularly interested in the conceptualization of child protection issues in research and practice, specifically in terms of family and community ownership of decision-making.
